AirPlay issue with MLB At Bat

I'm a baseball fan, like a lot of folks. Had me a brand new Apple TV 3 and an iPad 2, and was all set to listen to the ballgame.

a BUZZER goes off. Apparently, there are glitches with HTTP Live Streaming in at bat, which leads to the spinning loading icon followed by the Apple TV throwing a loading error.

For all of this, there is a workaround:

  • Click on "Gameday Audio"
  • Tap the Gear next to the "Gameday Audio" title
  • Change audio playback from HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) to Shoutcast Default
  • Click the "Gameday Audio" back button
  • Pause/Play audio if it was already playing
  • Click the Airplay button. Selecting the Apple TV will now work.
  • Tada! Enjoy!

Druplicon knitting pattern

I've been asked about this a handful of times, and thought to post the pattern here so others could benefit.

As a quick introduction, a while back I knitted a bag for a 15" macbook pro with a Druplicon in the center of each side. The pattern was done fair isle, though I ran into some issues with carrying the yarn across more than 16 stitches.

Unfortunately, I don't have photos of the finished work, but I plan on remaking it.

Set up instructions

Yarn used: Stitch Nation By Debbie Stoller Bamboo Ewe Yarn-Eucalyptus (3 balls, one in drupal blue, the other in a color of your choice).

  • Cast on 160 stitches using US 3 16# circular needles using long tail cast on method
  • Join in the round, set marker at first stitch.

Border rows

  • Knit in stockinette for 2.5 inches

Work Pattern

  • * K20 place marker, begin pattern below (it's upside-down for a reason, folks!), K in each row from bottom right to top left. K19 to complete side. rep from * on second side
  • Continue to work pattern until complete. Remove placed markers (except for starting marker).
  • K in stockinette for another 2.5 inches (or sized to fit your macbook based on gauge.

Finishing

  • Join both sides starting at beginning marker using kitchener stitch. This will form the bottom of the bag
  • Optionally, you can sew a button and create a loop using i-cord to fasten the bag closed.

Notes

I did this using fair isle, but you can use Intarsia. I've also considered double knitting for a reversible bag, but didn't want to to get into a project with 320 stitches just yet.

Rockstar Application Engineer?

This one popped up on craigslist, and I couldn't help but provide it here with a few annotations:

Searching for a rockstar web application engineer! (pacific heights)

Translation: "We're buttering you up from the getgo."

We're seeking an ambitious, talented, and motivated programmer to join as the first member of the technical team for an exciting and promising new web venture in a consumer-friendly space. The alpha version of the product has been built by contracted developers, but we're now looking for a more permanent addition to the team--someone who will assume responsibility for the ongoing development of the site, including building features for the first public launch of the product.

Translation: We outsourced it, and it came back completely mangled. It doesn't stand a chance of going out on its own. Hell, we fired the original team, and there's no documentation, so we need some poor sap to jump in and start over.

The ideal candidate is comfortable with and passionate about all aspects of building a cutting-edge web application from the ground up--from high-level architectural design to nitty gritty front-end and back-end coding. Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX is a must.

Translation: Because every web app in the world works out of the box if you apply enough buzzwords to it. If you've got AJAX, then it'll work (nevermind the fact that you need something on the backend for AJAX to talk to).

This is an incredible opportunity to help define and shape a new product from the beginning. Moreover, as one of the first team members of a lean start-up, there will be countless opportunities to learn all aspects of building the business and taking on non-technical roles as desired.

Translation: You will be overworked, but hey, you like that kind of lifestyle, right?

If you are interested, please contact me for further details on the start-up opportunity. We are really excited about the idea and look forward to telling intrigued prospective team members more about it! We're interested in hearing from anyone from the grizzled start-up veteran to the young and ambitious college graduate. Please include your resume and, to the extent available, samples and/or a portfolio of your past web work. Compensation TBD, but we're hoping to find someone who will join our team as an equity partner.

Translation: We can't pay you.
